The Mysterious King Tut
Description: This commercially made
lamp has a 3-D concave image of King Tut molded into the
interior of the pyramid. A bulb lights the face from below
creating shadows similar to those made when a convex image
is lit from above. Two things happen: the face appears as a
normal convex face and it seems to follow the
viewer from left to right. Purpose: This optical illusion
illustrates how the brain works to make a person see what
they expect to see. Faces are normally convex and when a
person's nose is to our right, that means they are looking
to our right. Our brain expects this and therefore
interprets King Tut that way. Applications,
Connections & Extensions: See the Connections
exhibit "Reverse Mask" for a home-made version of the moving
face phenomenon. Classroom
Components: This exhibit is
popular with psychology students studying human
perception.
