The 2009-2010 school year marks Coach Onstott's 35th year as a high school swimming coach.   He also teaches Kinetic Wellness (physical education) and is the Aquatics Director with responsibility over both of New Trier's swimming pools.  Onstott graduated from the University of Northern Iowa where he was coached by Glen Henry and was NCAA All American in 1975. He attended graduate school at the University of Iowa and received  his master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from National Louis University. Since arriving at New Trier in 1994 his boys teams have compiled a 153-8-1 dual meet record while winning 15 Central Suburban League South championships, 14 IHSA Sectional championships and finishing in the top 10 at the IHSA state meet 14 times.  Under his direction New Trier has won state championships in  2004, 2006, 2007 and most recently 2009.  The 2007 TEAM was named National Champions by Swimming World Magazine. The 2009 TEAM was named National Dual Meet Champions by NISCA (National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association). Since 1994 New Trier has produced 133 All CSL athletes, 124 All State swimmers and 89 NISCA  All America swimmers with 9 other swims up for consideration from the 2010 season.  He has been named sectional coach of the year several times and state Coach of the Year in 1999, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 by the Illinois Swimming Association. The National High School Coaches Association named him as their 2005 Boys Swimming National Coach of the Year.  In June of 2005 Coach Onstott was named National Swimming Coach of the Year by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association

Coach Onstott  resumed his duties as an assistant coach with the Girls Swimming & Diving TEAM in the fall of 2006.  He also served as an assistant coach from 1994-2001.  He was head coach from 2002-2005. During his four years at the helm the  girls  compiled a 33-7 record in dual meets, won 4 CSL South Championships, 4 Sectional Championships and placed 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 3rd (chronologically) in the IHSA State Finals.   New Trier athletes  earned 48 All Central Suburban League, 36 All State and 33 All America honors. He coached 3 relay state champions and two individual state champions.  In 2002  the 200 Medley Relay broke the state record.   He was named sectional  Coach of the Year, by the Illinois Swimming Association, in 2004 and  2005 and state Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2003 . 

Coach Onstott also has coached with the New Trier  Swim Club when he first arrived at New Trier.   As Aquatic Director he is involved with the New Trier Guard, Saturday Swim School, Red Cross  certification (Lifeguarding, CPR, FIrst Aid and Safety Training for Swim Coaches).  He also schedules all pool activities for both campuses.  Before coming to New Trier, Coach O was a head coach his almamater Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he was coached by Dave Brockway and Cy-Fair High School in Houston, Texas.  In 2006, Kennedy named Coach O to their "Athletic Hall of Fame".  He has been named  Coach of the Year at the district, conference, sectional, regional and state level several times in Iowa, Texas and Illinois.   In October 2009, he was inducted into the UNI "Athletics Hall of Fame". He is an ASCA (American Swimming Coaches Association) Level 5 certified coach.

In addition to coaching swimming Onstott has been  involved with state and national swim coaches organizations.  He was Secretary-Treasurer of IHSSCA (Iowa High School Swimming Coaches Association,)  Vice-President and President of TISCA (Texas Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association).  His involvement with  NISCA has included   membership on several standing committees as well as a term as Texas state delegate, and  Zone 4 Director.  At the NISCA convention and clinic in Austin, Texas in March of 2003, Onstott was selected as President-Elect.   He finished his two year term as President in March of 2007, Past-President in March of 2009 and is currently serving as All America Coordinator.  He is also a contributor to the NISCA Coaching Manual and has been a  speaker at NISCA's  national convention and clinic in 1997, 2005 and 2006. His article "The Art of War and Coaching Swimming" was published in the 2003 September/October edition of the NISCA Journal.  Coach O has been speaker at several clinics including National High School Athletic Coaches Association in June of 2005, the National Federation of State High School Associations Swimming and Diving Rules Interpretation Meetings in July of 2005t the Mid-States Swimposium in Columbus, Ohio in October of 2006, the Illinois Swimming Association clinic in August of 2007, the American Swimming Coaches Association World Clinic in September of 2007 and 2008, the Kansas High School Swimming Coaches Association Clinic 2008, the New Jersey Scholastic Coaches Association Clinic in 2008and the Iowa High School Swimming Coahes Association Clinic in August 2009.

Coach Onstott is married to the lovely Jan Onstott.  She is a Senior Sales director with Mary Kay Cosmetics and yes, the car is free, it's PINK and it is a Cadillac! Coach O and his wife have two children (now adults).  Lyndsee is  currently living in New York City.   She is taking some time off from teaching and is working as a nanny in New York City. Nate is a graduate of Belmont University in Nashville.  Nate is a drummer and was a member of New Trier Jazz Ensemble One, Downbeat Magazines # 1 Jazz band in the nation for the last several years! He is currently working Nashville and touring with Mikeschair.   Both swam for New Trier  while in high school.
