Coach Woodbury is a veteran of over 25 years of high school coaching. After graduating from New Trier and the University of Wisconsin, he started coaching at New Trier West in 1969 with the boys team. Bruce moved to New Trier (Winnetka) as the head girls coach when the West campus was closed in the early1980s. He coached the girls team to seven straight titles from 1981-1987. He retired from coaching after the 7th straight win. He continued as a math teacher. He felt the call back to coaching in 1997 and lead the Trevs to 3 straight state runner up finishes and then two state championships in a row . . . . . . before once again retiring from coaching. In 2006, when the position of head girls swimming and diving coach opened, Coach Woodbury un-retired, once again. In the almost 40 years that Coach B has been at New Trier, he has been a Physical Education teacher, a Math teacher and an advisor. He was involved at New Trier on many levels serving on several school committees and as a peer helping supervisor.He has also been involved with the Saturday Swim School since the mid 1950's. He was taught to swim in the Saturday Swim School and then taught lessons as a guard. He was also the Aquatic Director at New Trier West. He now is officially retired teaching. Bruce has been named Sectional and State Coach of the Year at least 12 times each. He has an incredible dual meet record including going undefeated in the 5 seasons he was coach from 1997-2001. |
